Roundtable at the BSIA

Anna Nadibaidze will be speaking at the roundtable event “From Principles to Practice: Ensuring Human Oversight in Military Uses of AI”, organised by the Balsillie School of International Affairs (BSIA) in Waterloo, Canada.
The panel brings together experts on AI in international security to discuss three key questions. First, how are AI systems such as large-language models currently used in warfare, and what are the implications for human judgement in military decision-making? Second, what are the viable paths forward for governing AI in the military domain, especially in terms of putting broader principles into practice? And third, what should be Canada’s role in military AI governance debates, as it seeks to leverage its middle power status in global affairs? The panel also features Branka Marijan, Morgan Flom, and Sara Matthews.

A visit to Northeastern University London
12-15 October 2026
Denise Garcia recently visited Northeastern University London where she held the lecture: Breathing Oxygen into a Failing World Order: AI’s Global Diplomacy, and participated in the workshop: Workshop on Autonomous Weapons & AI-Assisted Military Systems.
In her lecture, Garcia explored how international cooperation on AI governance continues to evolve despite geopolitical tensions. Drawing on her experience in global diplomacy, she highlighted how scientists, civil society, and middle powers help translate AI governance principles into practice.
The workshop brought together researchers, campaigners, and activists to exchange knowledge and discuss the implications of AI in military contexts. Discussions also explored future research directions and opportunities for collaboration across academia, NGOs, policymakers, and civil society.
Additionally, Garcia gave an interview to Northeastern Global News about the challenges of regulating AI in military contexts, highlighting the risks of autonomous weapons and the importance of translating AI governance principles into practice.
Conference at the University of Ottawa

Anna Nadibaidze spoke at the event “Canada and the Middle Power Challenge”, organised by the Canadian Pugwash Group (CPG) and the Centre for International Policy Studies (CIPS), and held at the University of Ottawa on 2 October 2026. Anna was a speaker on the panel “Military Applications of AI – Can the Juggernaut be Controlled?”, together with Dr. Branka Marijan (Project Ploughshares) and Sam Vaez (Canadian Pugwash Group).
DIAS Interview with Ingvild Bode

As one of the newest Chairs at the Danish Institute for Advanced Study (DIAS), Ingvild Bode recently sat down with DIAS for an interview about the use of artificial intelligence in warfare. The interview explores the choices being made here and now, and how they relate to questions of human judgement, responsibility, and the international norms governing the use of force.
In addition to discussing her research, Ingvild reflects on her journey towards becoming a scholar of international politics — a career path she had not initially envisioned.
